"A VERY FRUITFUL EXCHANGE OF OPINIONS."

A press-conference was held just after the closure of the International Eurasian Transport Conference at Taurida Palace. It was presided over by Sergei Frank, Russian Federation Transport Minister, and Ivan Besedin, First Deputy Communications Minister. "New East" asked them about their impressions of the Conference.

      Ivan Besedin:

"The main thing is that the conference gave the participants the chance to exchange views on the most important questions concerning the development of a Eurasian transport system. Everyone present supported the conference's conclusion: Europe and Asia, indeed, the entire world is extremely interested in the creation of a united transport-information system that will facilitate economic development in countries on the Eurasian continent."

      Sergei Frank:

"It goes without saying that the issues discussed at the conference did not of course embrace the entire spectre of transport-related problems. Each country has its own problems, its own distinct transport system. But the exchange of opinions was very useful for all participants. We cast the net widely and strove to envision the resolution of transport-related questions in a broader context, via establishment and perfection of a transport system that will embrace the entire, vast, Eurasian continent.

Our Summary Declaration will recommend moving forward toward the realisation of such a system. I am confident that beginning in the early years of the 21st century, the Eurasian transport and communications system will unite and bind our countries closer together with more direct links."
