AN INTERNATIONAL EURASIAN CONFERENCE IS CONVENING ON THE BANKS OF THE NEVA RIVER
The International Eurasian Conference on Transport will be held in St. Petersburg on May 12-13, 1998. It is organised by the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Transport together with the Ministry of Transport Communications, the Federal Road Service, the Federal Airline Service, and the administrations of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region. The European Committee and the United Nations’ European Economic Committee are assisting. The Russian government considers the development of communications between Europe and Asia by means of the further integration of Russia’s transport infrastructure into the intercontinental network to be extremely important. The aim of the conference will be to evaluate the implementation of the decisions adopted by the Third All-European Conference on Transport held in Helsinki in June 1997. That conference focused on the further development of Eurasian transport communications, on the ways to synchronise the transport systems of the West and the East and on the unification of national transportation laws. The St. Petersburg Conference will provide an opportunity for the exchange of views between the representatives of governments and parliaments of a number of European and Asian countries, international governmental organisations, financial institutions, leading non-governmental organisations and various transport associations. The Third International TRANSTECH-98 transport exhibition, featuring a wide range of scientific, technical and industrial projects, will be held simultaneously with the Conference.
